Terms of use
Using this site
KnownAlcohol is published for adults who are over the legal drinking age where they live. By using it you confirm that you are. The site is provided for general information and personal use.
You do not need an account, and there is nothing to sign. These terms apply to reading the site as it is published; they are not a contract for a service.
What the content is
Everything here is general reference information. It is not legal advice, not medical advice, not a safety clearance, and not a substitute for the current rules published by the authority in your jurisdiction or for advice from a qualified professional who knows your circumstances.
Where we state a rule, we name the jurisdiction, the authority, the reference, and the date the rule was last checked. That date tells you when somebody read the source. It does not promise the rule has not changed since. See the disclaimer for what that means in practice and the methodology for how verification works.
Recipes and procedures
Recipes, service methods, storage guidance, and production descriptions are provided so you can understand and reproduce them. You are responsible for working safely, for handling equipment and ingredients correctly, for allergen checks, for food hygiene, for the condition of anything you serve, and for complying with the law where you are.
Production content describes commercial and licensed processes. It is written so a reader can understand what those processes involve, including their hazards. It is not an instruction to carry them out, and describing a licensed process is not permission to attempt it without the licence. We publish no instructions for distilling spirits outside a licensed facility.
If you are serving other people, the responsibility for what you serve and to whom is yours, including checking age, watching for intoxication, and knowing the service rules that apply where you are.
Calculators
The calculators produce estimates about drinks, not measurements of people. They estimate strength, dilution, and standard drink counts from numbers you supply.
They do not estimate impairment, and they cannot tell you whether you are able to drive or to do anything else that requires you to be unimpaired. Do not use them for that. Every result shows its inputs, its assumptions, and its uncertainty, and says what it cannot tell you. If you have been drinking, do not drive.
Acceptable use
Do not use this site:
- to break the law, or to help anyone else do so;
- to obtain alcohol while under the legal age, or to help anyone under the legal age obtain it;
- to attempt to defeat a legal limit, a breath test, or a service refusal;
- to disrupt the site, probe it for vulnerabilities without permission, or scrape it at a rate that degrades it for other readers;
- to misrepresent its content as your own, or to present a modified version as ours.
Content ownership
The text, structure, and design of this site belong to their authors. Names of producers, regions, categories, and protected terms belong to their respective owners and appear here descriptively, not as a claim on them.
Quoting and reuse
We would rather be quoted accurately than not quoted, so this is set out plainly.
| Use | Position |
|---|---|
| Quoting a short passage with attribution and a link | Yes. No permission needed. |
| Citing a figure or a measure, with a link to the page | Yes. Please link to the page, so a reader can see the date on it. |
| Linking to any page | Yes. Deep links are fine and will not be broken deliberately. |
| Republishing a page in full, or a substantial part of one | Needs permission. |
| Bulk scraping or systematic copying | Needs permission. |
| Using pages to train a system that reproduces them | Needs permission. |
| Reproducing a legal statement without its jurisdiction and date | Not permitted. Those are part of the claim, and stripping them makes it false. |
External links
Links to regulators, health authorities, standards bodies, and research are provided so you can check our work, and we would rather you did. We do not control those sites, are not responsible for their content, and cannot promise a cited page will still say what it said when we read it. That is precisely why the reference and the verification date are printed alongside the link.
Availability and changes
The site is provided as it is. We do not guarantee it will be available without interruption or free of errors, and pages change as rules and evidence change. Retired pages redirect to the page that took over the subject rather than disappearing.
Liability
To the extent the law permits, KnownAlcohol is not liable for loss arising from reliance on the content, from acting on a rule that has changed since it was verified, or from any use of a recipe, procedure, or calculator.
Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. Where local consumer law gives you rights that cannot be excluded, those rights stand regardless of what this page says.
Accessibility
The site is built to be read with a screen reader or a keyboard, not adapted for one afterwards. Every page has a skip link to the content, one first-level heading, labelled navigation landmarks, and a declared language.
Every image carries alternative text, and a picture that is decoration rather than information carries empty alternative text so it is skipped instead of announced, while data tables name their columns and rows, and each one has a caption saying what it holds.
Colours are held to a contrast ratio of at least 4.5 to 1 against the darkest background they sit on, not only against white. Where the interface moves, the movement is switched off for anyone whose system asks for reduced motion.
Nothing here is behind an account, a popup, or a consent wall, so there is no dialogue to escape from before reading.
If something is not usable
If something on this site is not usable with the tools you use, tell us and say which page and which tool: that is treated as a defect in the page, the same as a broken link or a wrong figure.
General terms
If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest continues to apply. A failure to enforce a term on one occasion is not a waiver of it. If these terms change materially, the change is described on this page rather than made silently, and the update date changes.
