Direct comparisons, one decision at a time

Each comparison answers one question about two things. Comparisons are filed alphabetically, so bourbon and rye lives at one address no matter which way round you searched for it.

Comparisons that are really about one decision

Most drinks comparisons are asked in the middle of a decision: which of these two to buy, which to use in a drink, or whether the more expensive one is worth it.

That is why the honest form of the answer names the deciding difference first and treats everything else as detail. Two spirits can differ in a dozen measurable ways while only one of them touches the choice in front of you.

Where two things are closer than the argument suggests

Some pairs are separated by a rule rather than by anything in the glass, and the rule can be about where the liquid was made or what the label may say rather than about how it was made.

Others are separated by a genuine production difference that a mixed drink then buries. A difference that survives neat and disappears under tonic is worth knowing about in exactly one of those two settings.

What a good comparison establishes

The useful comparison is not a list of differences but an account of which difference actually decides the answer. Two spirits may differ in a dozen measurable ways while only one of them matters for the choice you are making. Work out which difference decides your answer, and the rest becomes detail you can read or skip.

Where the honest answer is that the difference is smaller than the argument about it, that is worth knowing before you choose.
